'Grow' is hard to describe. Its a track that is more a feeling and a place than anything else, it takes me back to times dancing like a fool with a big smile on my face, twenty something. A summer track that could be heard by a pool, swaying and drinking cocktails under a warm sun.
A loose breakbeat, a laid back tempo and bass synths creating rhythm to make you move. The track has a nonchalant coolness, falsetto vocals in the chorus and some beautiful funky guitar work too.
It inhabits the late nights, confused emotions and a stage of life where, despite having a 'connection', you have to leave and move forward. This track is actually all about 'walking away' in order to move forward and 'grow'. Reinventing and "finding" a new self.
'Grow' smashes together the best parts of electronic music in the 90s, groups like Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Lemmon Jelly and even a little bit of the Flaming Lips with elements, and I mean this in the best way possible, of 80s pop vocally. Is there a George Michael element? Possibly, there might even be a touch of Bros and I think it is all very intentionally pop orientated, almost in a tongue in a cheek way.
The video for this track is fantastically funny, I won't ruin the twist at the end but it is definitely worth a few minutes of your time.
Check this one out, it is a top pick of this issues submissions.
