Alex Hedley is a Musician and songwriter from Swanage in Dorset, UK. He's spent many a year creating and refining his sound as a singer songwriter but has recently added to the sound with more vast and orchestral sounds to create 'Alex Hedley & The Living Sea Orchestra'. This has so far seen three new releases in 2020 with the third being the current 'Lighthouse Keeper' song, a moody yet up tempo seascape about a lighthouse keeper and the trials of his life living in wonderment of what could have been but instead now feeling stuck in his isolated and barren tower to further wonder.

For a song entitled 'Lighthouse Keeper' it just wouldn't be right if it didn't start with an accordion and a strumming acoustic guitar, it is sort of expected really but what I wasn't expecting to hear was the strength of Alex's vocals. The tone he has cuts through easily. The song moves into a dreamy string section with choral backing vocals as Alex begs "kill my pride or I am not going to see the light"

A rhythmic beat builds on the orchestral elements and some beautiful string arrangements appear around the middle of the tune before cutting back to solo acoustic strumming.

Lyrically "Lighthouse Keeper" is poetic, describing the change from a "man who used to shine" to being "faceless", I love the use of words Alex chooses in the first verse where he sings "the sunflowers in his eyes have turned to black" bringing all the associations that sunflowers have into the song. He also deals with the fear, struggles, dangers and pitfalls that exists in trying to regain the person you were. The line "I start diving for ghosts of the past, in the sea cave with the sharks" is really sublime.

A beautiful folksy, acoustic, orchestral journey with a strong vocal, evoking the feeling of realising that a spark has been lost and may not be that easy to find again.
